TOP 40/POP NEWS: Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” Video to be Turned into a 3-D Film By Its Director John Landis!!
One of the big pieces of news for the upcoming new year 2015, is that Michael Jackson’s 14-minute music video for “Thriller” will be turned into a 3-D version, which will only happen because the director of the original video, John Landis, has settled a legal dispute with Jackson’s estate. Although its still in the planning stages, Landis hopes to release the video – which happens to have been the most expensive video of its time, and also consequently rated by Rolling Stone readers as, “the greatest video of all time” – in theaters and even on Blu-ray as reported by the New York Daily News.
About six months prior to Michael Jackson’s passing in 2009, a lawsuit was filed by Landis who said the singer had “fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct” regarding the “Thriller” video. According to the lawsuit, Landis was seeking 50 percent of the video’s net profits, and at the time the profits were rumored to be close to $1 million.
“That lawsuit went on for so many years, but we settled and they paid me finally,” Landis told the paper. “And so, actually there is something happening with ‘Thriller.’ It is going to reappear in a highly polished and three-dimensional way that is very exciting on the big screen.”
Landis is a talented director who directed such films as “Animal House” and “Blues Brothers”, and his horror flick An American Werewolf in London was what originally inspired Jackson to have him direct “Thriller”.
Daily News reported that Jackson hoped to add a 3-D version of “Thriller” as part of his “This Is It” London residency. The paper also suggested the estate had been considering making a “Thriller” video game, either as “a dance experience or a zombie-style, shoot-’em-up-style movie.”
