Mike, the guest DJ at my event last night, was checking out my cool mini laser. He wants one! What’s great about this mini laser? The price! It can work for many types of events, yet not cost you a fortune like most laser lights.

Four reasons why DeeJay Shelly likes this:
1) Mini laser
It doesn’t over take the entire room like a “club” style laser. This doesn’t mean you can’t use it for a club or small bar – you absolutely can – and provide a great light show. What the mini laser offers is the ability to provide a tasteful laser light show effect even at an upscale venue. This way you don’t have to spend a ton of money purchasing numerous light shows for different types of events.

If you DJ kids’ parties you will thank yourself for bringing this to your next kid event! You have the option to shine it on the wall, ceiling, or dance floor. Shine the laser on a wall and the kids will keep themselves busy chasing the moving lights!!

2) Light show options are blue, red, or both.
Most people associate green lasers as “club” type light shows. Florescent green lasers provide great lighting effects for night clubs, but for a wedding they can come off as tacky (of course, unless your client wants the “club” type feel for their reception). For a few of my younger clients’ weddings, I’ve used this laser for the end of night dancing and they loved it! The blue color lights especially seem to be a favorite since they provide the laser light show type feel, but with a more subtle tone.

3) IT’S SO SMALL! If you are used to carrying around the big and bulky lights, you’ll be very happy that this light is about the size of a cable box! Especially for FEMALE DJs – considering the size and weight of this product and the fact that it provides a great light show it’s really a must have!

4) You can’t beat the price! Some lasers can cost up to $1000+. You can find this mini portable laser online – new $200.00 and used $125.00.

Meet CINDY! My new friend! She lives here in the US, but Cindy is originally from China. She is teaching me all about the Chinese social media she uses such as, QQ and We Chat (Although I think I’ve talked her into using Facebook as well, since it’s a lot easier for me to understand!!) Even though she speaks very little English (and I have no idea how to speak Chinese), we still manage to break the language barrier – SMILE AND POINT! Cindy works at the nail salon where my mom, sisters, and I go to get our “manis” & “pedis”. She’s a DOLL!! And guess what??? Marcella and Roselee aren’t the only twins in town. Cindy has a twin too – Nancy! Yesterday at the salon I gave out my SBS wristbands. The girls loved them! Candy especially liked the pink ones.

I chose this picture of Cindy to use for the SHELLZAM because as you notice she is making the “Peace” sign. This pretty much sums up who Cindy is. She’s a kind, warm, peaceful soul! Cindy’s favorite song right now is “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum. What are you listening to? I really want to know!

Serato vs. Virtual DJ: Which Software is the best?

If you are a BEGINNER DJ, OR, a DJ in the market to upgrade your current software, you may be wondering, “What DJ software is the best?” Recently, I had the same question. I reached out to a few of my DJ friends to find out the scoop on software. With so many different features and versions for each, it can be difficult deciding between the two. To make it easier on you I’m going to share with you my findings —

It’s not a question of which software is the best. It’s a question of which software is BEST FOR YOU.

What’s really the biggest difference between the two?
“They say” (“They” meaning the majority of people who sell or deal with the software) that VIRTUAL DJ is targeted towards the MOBILE DJ, where as SERATO is targeted towards the CLUB DJ. Does this mean that a Mobile DJ shouldn’t purchase Serato? No. I just did. And I know other Mobile DJs who use Serato as well.

Why do “they say” this?
Virtual DJ allows you to set up playlists (similar to iTunes) that will BEAT MATCH the songs for you. Serato allows you to set up CRATES (basically the same thing as a playlist) but it will NOT beat match the songs – it’s all manual.

Does this mean that if you purchase Virtual DJ that you don’t need to mix the music?
Yes and No. What it means is that during those times when it’s necessary to set up a playlist to run on its own – AND still sound good – you can. However, when you want to add your own uniqueness to the mix you can switch back to mixing manually.

Can you give an example of when a DJ would do this?
Yes. Most Mobile DJs have other responsibilities during an event. They coordinate with vendors (photographers, videographers, event planners). Most of them also act as the MC for the event. At certain times during an event it may be necessary to run a playlist. This is the real benefit of Virtual DJ. However, when a playlist is not needed the DJ can switch back to mixing the music manually – especially when the dancing starts.

But DeeJay Shelly you posted a few days ago that you purchased the Numark MIXDECK EXPRESS that comes with Serato. You’re a MOBILE DJ – Why didn’t you purchase VIRTUAL DJ?

It basically came down to PRICE. Most controller/software bundles are starting at $700 and can go as high as $900 or even $1300. You need to purchase both the CONTROLLER and the software. Without the controller you won’t be able to hear what’s playing on each channel simultaneously (which is how you mix). After weighing out all my options, I just felt this was a good decision for me. It was $500 for the Numark MIX DECK EXPRESS (and this even beat prices on other options at the DJ EXPO).

The only downfall is Serato DJ Intro (the software that comes with the MIX DECK EXPRESS) does not have an option to record your mixes. But at $500 I still having breathing room in the future to purchase Virtual DJ (the Controller is compatible) and/or upgrade to the next level Serato DJ and still come in lower than the other offers out there.

ROCK “N” ROLL NEWS: “It’s over! Liam and Noel Gallagher end feud.”

That was last week’s headline in a story by “Oasis Mania”, the top facebook fan profile for Oasis. In it they announced the Gallagher brothers “recently met up at a family wedding in Ireland and buried the hatchet and are now even planning to open a bar together with their beloved mother Peggy.”

A source told the Daily Star: “Liam initially came up with the idea after a recent trip to Manchester with his mum Peggy. The brothers are thinking about an indie rock-themed place which serves artisan food. They plan to call the bar “Champagne Supernova” after the Oasis anthem from the band’s seminal album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”

With no guarantee this venture will lead to an Oasis reunion, the group’s original guitarist nicknamed ‘Bonehead’ predicted a reunion may still happen: “If someone said, ‘Here’s a field, here’s a stage and here’s 200,000 people,’ I’m sure Liam would jump up and do it. I don’t think it would even take anyone offering him a massive bankroll of money. He’d do it because that’s what he loves.”

ALTERNATIVE NEWS: “Bastille, and their hit song “Pompeii” will Explode on Saturday Night Live!”

In Alternative News the popular Londonband, Bastille, fresh off the success of their massive hit song, Pompeii, (now a Top Ten hit on US itunes) have confirmed they will be appearing on an upcoming January 25^th episode of “Saturday Night Live” along with the host, actor Jonah Hill. This will surely garner Bastille further exposure which will add to their success.

HIP HOP NEWS: “The Beastie Boys are Back! At least in print in 2015.”

Surviving members of the hit making trio, “The Beastie Boys”, Mike D and Ad-Rock are planning a memoir which will honor their storied career in music. The New York Times reports that the remaining “Boys” plan to create a loosely structured oral history featuring a mix of their voices, outside contributors and images, cut through with their characteristic irreverent humor.
Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz have signed a deal with Random House imprint, Spiegel & Grau, for the still-untitled book. It will be edited by hip-hop journalist Sacha Jenkins for a planned fall of 2015 release. Diamond and Horovitz are “interested in making the book a multidimensional experience,” said Julie Grau, publisher of Spiegel & Grau.
Though their late member, Adam Yauch has passed away, it will be a great return for the Beastie Boys when their memoir is released.

EDM NEWS: DJ Green Lantern Teams up with Craze for new single, “Rocket Launcher”
According to Max Weinstein of www.vibe.com, DJ Green Lantern looked to expand his horizons as an EDM producer, so he’s teamed up with Craze for a brand new single they call, ‘Rocket Launcher.’ Slow Roast Records says it’s a “lil bit of 808 … Lil bit of Moombah … Lil bit of Dancehall …”

TOP 40/POP NEWS: “Katy Perry gets some wise advice from Stevie Nicks.”

Nicks told ABC News Radio of her first meeting with Katy Perry last fall when both were performing in London: “I met her after her rehearsal at 11:30 [at the hotel]”. “I thought it was going to be a 20 minute, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ thing – we sat until, like, three in the morning, and pretty much talked about everything.”

Nicks’ interest peaked when Perry asked about her solo career. Katy asked Stevie if she had any rivals while she was making her first solo outing, Bella Donna. Nicks said, “I was speechless. I was, like, ‘I didn’t have any rivals.’ She said, ‘Really? None?’ I said, ‘No…the girls in Heart [and] Pat Benatar [were] friend[s].

Nicks asked Perry if she had rivals. She said, ““It’s not us. It’s the Internet.” She told Nicks, fans of female pop stars sometimes pit one against the other which the singers don’t condone. Nicks gave Katy some advice to navigate pop stardom in this day and age. “I said, ‘Katy, let me tell you something. You don’t have any rivals. So forget that. Never say that word again.’” “All of those girls? Friends. You’ll probably work with all of them at some point.””
Nicks proved her point because now she and Katy are “Friends.” During a Fleetwood Mac concert over a week ago, lead singer, Steve Nicks dedicated the band’s classic song “Landslide” to Perry and her boyfriend John Mayer who were both in the audience.
