Welcome to the first Scratch Chat! Where you’ll hear all things DJ! In this first episode DJ Eddie G (Edward Gaittins) and I talk Song Selection and How to Read a Crowd. Check it out and tell us what you think.Do you like listening to audio clips?
Important DJ TIp: Song Selection is one of the most important parts of DJing. If no one likes the songs you’re mixing, no one is getting on the dance floor. How do you read a crowd? As a beginner DJ, you may have no idea what it means to “Read the crowd”. I didn’t really know what it meant when I started DJing years ago. So DJ Ed and I break it down with a few ways you can become an expert crowd reader! 1) What’s the demographic? Age groups? Really scope out the guests at your event and take mental notes. Once you have a better idea of who is attending, you’ll have a better idea of what to play. 2) Body language is key. Do you see hips shaking and feet tapping to what you are playing? Do you see smiles? Or, are you getting the stink eye? More importantly, are you smiling??!! Watch the body language of your guests. If their body language is telling you their happy, then most likely you’re on the right track. If you’re getting the stink eye you may want to head in another direction – or music genre.
How did we get here??? Originally, Ed and I set out to make some Dj videos. However, as you may know, things don’t always go as planned! We had some technically difficulties during the video. So…. we decided to just record us chatting about DJ stuff instead. Then I text Bert (our video guy who LOVES podcasts) and I said maybe we should start a DJ podcast too? He said call it, “Scratch Chat”. Love it! So we’re going to try this out on the channel. Curious to hear what you guys & gals think. Thanks! DJ DeeJay Shelly
