Tuesday’s DJ Tip: How to be a Mobile DJ: How to use a Generator

https://michelleleeentertainment.com I don’t normally like to use generators, but when there’s no electricity near by, you may need one. If you’ve been hired to DJ an outside ceremony, you always want to find out if you’ll have electric. If not, you may need to buy, or rent a generator to power your equip. Things you’ll need to know:
1) Make sure you get one that is strong enough to power your equipment
2) Make sure you have a long extension cord (while they’re not super loud, they do make some noise. You’ll want to make sure they are a bit aways from the ceremony area.
3) Make sure it’s filled with gas
4) Turn the choke On
5) Turn the generator On
6) Pull the cord and start er’ up!
7) Once warmed up you can turn the choke off

I’m not a big fan of using generators because I’ve been told by electricians and sound guys they could put stress on your equip. So I only use them when I absolutely have to. Plus, if it’s not strong enough you can feel the electricity pulling and if this happens it can effect the sound of the music going high and low. If you need to use one just make sure you test it out before hand.

What an amazing time we had at the 2015 International DJ Expo in Atlantic City. While Nathan, Juan, John and I were there, we got to check out a lot of super cool DJ equipment. What was one of our favorites? The new Numark NS7III. One of the best benefits about attending the DJ expo is trying out the new controllers. This way, you can find the controller that’s best for you.

Rich Curtis, a product specialist manager for Numark, explained to me a few of the features on the Numark NS7 III. You can check out why we love this new controller in this short video.

In this video female DJ, DeeJay Shelly, provides the BASIC steps for beginner DJs (or any DJ) on how to connect the NuMark Mix Deck Express to a Self Powered Speaker.

In this example, I use the Numark Mix Deck Express and the JBL 515XT Self Powered Speaker. However, this should give you a general idea of how to hook up any mixer/controller to a self powered speaker. In this short tutorial, I use XLR connectors which you’ll find you can use with most types of DJ equipment.

The event is in honor of Kathryn Marie Robinson who passed away from cancer on December 4, 2015. Kathryn left behind three children and husband. Her husband, Michael, decided to donate the proceeds to other families in need. 100% of the proceeds will be split between a local Philadelphia in need (who wishes to remain anonymous) and Nikki Powers, a mother battling cancer in NYC.

Elizabeth Delgado, born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, moved to the United States at the age of 12 with her family while searching for the American Dream. Last October, I DJ’d this event in The Penthouse at The Park in NYC. Since it was such a great event, I asked Rick Galvin, founder of the Carol Galvin Women’s Cancer Foundation, if he would like to bring the event to Philadelphia. This way, we could help raise money for women here too. He thought it was a great idea. So we are! We’re putting on a fashion show at Stratus Rooftop Lounge. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be split between a local Philadelphia in need (who wishes to remain anonymous) and Nikki Powers, a mother battling cancer in NYC. Pop star, Meredith O’Connor will also perform at the show. I will be the DJ/MC for the event!

Meredith O’Connor is a singer, songwriter, and anti-bullying activist.

She has four songs that are distributed worldwide and two hit music videos on YouTube.

She is currently touring schools to speak publicly about her experiences with bullying and letting kids know there are many ways to cope with it as she has turned this negative to a positive by trying to be a role model for those who feel they are alone.

2) The invite list will include many people in the events industry in Philadelphia, as well as the public.

3) The event producers are from companies who sometimes are in need of models. One is Christina Hughes with Mid-Atlantic Events Magazine. The magazine hires models from time to time and/or refers models for other companies. One of the other producers for the event is Kaitlin Sweeney, Managing Director, with East Coast Entertainment. ECE is a nationwide entertainment company who has an office in New York. As a female DJ, I am hired to DJ many fashion shows, so I of course would also keep you mind for future paying events!

3) Your names and profiles will be heavily promoted on all Michelle Lee Entertainment & Sounds By Shelly website and social media pages. All of the six event producers, photographers & videographer will promote you on their websites and social media sites as well.

4) We will encourage everyone involved in the event to like all of your social media pages.

Two MLE photographers, Bert’s Eye View and Rachael Conlan, are coming to shoot the event. Photographer, Rachael Conlan, will be strictly focused on taking pictures of the models.
