Over the years I’ve DJ’d all types of multi-cultural corporate, weddings and family events. As a DJ, it’s important to educate yourself in many different types of music and different cultural ceremonies. This way, when a client asks you, “Can you DJ a Quinceanera?” “Can you DJ an Italian wedding?” “Can you DJ a Mitzvah?” “Can you DJ Bollywood music?” You can say, “Yes! I can!”

We actually celebrated Michela & Rachel’s Sweet 16, yet we incorporated Spanish traditions similar to a Quinceañera (15th Birthday). A Spanish family tradition is the “Changing of the Shoes”. It signifies a young girl becoming a woman. Since part of their family is also Italian, Carl Smith, an Opera Singer performed during their introductions! WOW. It’s awesome to be able to do what I love and play music for people. What’s even more amazing is the honor to spend their most important days with them!!! Thank you to Michela and Rachel for having us be a part of their big day!!! Thanks everyone hope whatever you’re doing, you’re having FUN and playing music! DJ DeeJay Shelly – Get SHELL Shocked!

I couldn’t be more excited to hear the Supreme Court ruling yesterday making same sex marriage a right nationwide. The timing couldn’t be better to check out the National Constitution Center’s feature exhibit, “Speaking Out For Equality. The Constitution, Gay Rights and The Supreme Court.” I was able to attend the grand opening of the exhibit. What’s more? I had the chance to interview the Philadelphia Gay News. Get Shell Shocked! This female DJ wears wings!

“Can you call me? I have a woman who saw you in Purgatory and wants to book you.” Looks like the wings worked!

While I was so glad to receive this text from my DC agent with EastCoast Entertainment, Jenny Langer (aka Black Betty), I couldn’t help to crack up at her message. Although… considering I almost had to call a hotel last week to ask them if they found a black tutu, I guess it’s not that out of the ordinary for this female DJ!

What’s coming up next? I’m so excited to head to NYC for the Summer Fancy Food Show at the Javits Center!!!! Are you a foodie? While I don’t believe I’m allowed to take photos inside the actual show. I will make sure to blog about all the super cool things I see at this event so I can share it with all of you! Stay tuned!

As Snoop Dogg would say, “Drop It Likes It’s Hot!” There are a lot of companies who offer to make custom DJ drops for a fee. Yet, what if you want your own voice for the drop, or a friend’s? Or, maybe you want to make one on the fly while you’re at a job. Or, maybe you just don’t want to purchase a professionally made drop. Can you make a simple one yourself? Yes!

In this short video quick tip, DJ Frankie SURE and I teach you how to make a simple and fast DJ drop just by using your iPhone and Serato DJ Intro. While we used the iPhone and Serato for this example, almost all phones have a voice recorder and most software allows you to load samples.

Step one is to record your custom drop using the voice recorder app on your smart phone. Next, download your new recording to your computer. Third, drop the recording into your samples. You can just use the simple recording as a drop. Yet, if you want to enhance the sound you can use your special effects. Once you select the special effects you like with your drop, record the final on your phone, then download back to your computer. This way, you can use it anytime.

In this example, I made a simple voice sample of Frank’s DJ name, “DJ Frankie SURE”. Yet, you could get really creative with your recordings and special effects. For example, if you’re DJing a private party have some of the guests say the guests of honor’s name. Then, you can play it throughout the night. It adds a personal touch to the party. With the special effects added your guest of honor is sure to feel really special to have their own DJ Drop!

SNEAK PEAK! Last week, Jim Cohn from Mid-Atlantic Events Magazine and I went to see what all the excitement was about at The National Constitution Center. So what’s the news? They just opened their feature exhibit, “Speaking Out For Equality: The Constitution, Gay Rights and The Supreme Court.” What’s more? Summary: Nathan and I hosted, Justin and Ashleigh’s wedding at Holly Hedge Estates this past August. Pulling down the driveway, it felt as if we were arriving to the main living quarters of an old plantation. The ambience was calming and peaceful. Once we started to investigate the grounds, we walked into the garden where we were to play music for the ceremony. Nathan and I just looked at each other and said, “Wow.” It just felt magical! With the rustic, old farm house feel and charming gardens, it makes for the perfect outside ceremony – and it was!

After the ceremony, we moved into the “classic bank barn” for the dinner and reception. Even though the ceremony was quite peaceful, the reception was full of fun, dancing and excitement! “No one left the dance floor”.

Talk about SHELL Shock! What a FUN HOUSE the Stratus Rooftop Bar was last night!!!! On the list of entertainment? A Fire breather (I didn’t get his name), Contortionist – the lovely Scarlett Checkers, A Living Carpet by Sandy O, and of course the team from MLE!

Erica and I had a blast dressed to the Moulin Rouge theme and welcoming guests (in the French language) as they arrived to the event. Once the reception started on the rooftop, myself and Nathan Barta took turns on the ones and twos (I was also acting as the MC). The guests loved that I was a female DJ! Erica helped to get the party started on the dance floor.

The outcome? Everyone was having so much fun the party was extended an hour overtime until 12am. We received this amazing review from Kaitlin, our agent at EastCoast, “THANK YOU again for another awesome event. You and your team really know how to get the crowd moving, and everyone loved you.”

What’s more??!! This party wouldn’t have been complete without Bert’s Eye View capturing it all on video!!! I can not wait to show you scenes from this truly unique event! A special thanks to Kaitlin, our agent with EastCoast Entertainment in Philadelphia for booking our team for this amazing party. We can’t wait for the next one.

DeeJay Shelly’s interview with the “Man With The Hat” Rich Medina!

Ok. Wearing a hat may not make you as good as Rich Medina, yet listening to his DJ advice may!

It’s the Rich Medina series! Hear thoughts and advice from one of the world’s elite DJs! He performs in numerous cities from Brooklyn to Amsterdam. What’s more? Rich Medina is also a producer and poet. This is the first video in my interview series with Rich Medina.

Prior to the interview, I reached out to my facebook friends to see if they had any questions they wanted me to ask Rich. Husein Bandi wanted to know if Rich thought there should be a standard type of equipment to use when DJing. Rich’s answer? “It’s just like anything else. If something feels right to you, then use it.”
