ROCK “N” ROLL NEWS: John Lennon’s Original Artwork Up For Auction!!
The original artwork and poetry of the late Beatle, John Lennon, for his mid-Sixties books In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works are set to be auctioned off. The U.K. publisher of the books, Tom Maschler, has had the works in his personal collection for the past 50 years. 89 pieces will hit the auction block of Sotheby’s June 5th, and will be a part of the largest-ever private collection of Lennon’s work to be offered up. According to the Associated Press, prices will range from $500 to $70,000.
One work that is going to auction is a specific drawing of a boy with six birds which originally appeared in the 1965 book A Spaniard in the Works. That same art work was later used as the cover of the Beatles’ single “Free as a Bird” released in 1995 when the three surviving Beatles reunited, and it is expected to sell for between $12,000 and $15,000.
Lennon released In His Own Write in 1964, and he put out A Spaniard in the Works the following year. Lennon discussed the books during a lengthy historic 1971 interview with Rolling Stone. In the interview her said they were an extension of exploring his emotion in songs like “I’m a Loser” and “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away.” “I was already a stylized songwriter on the first album,” he said. “But to express myself I would write Spaniard in the Works or In His Own Write, the personal stories which were expressive of my personal emotions.”
